When to Seed

Planting too late can lead to weak seedlings that may not survive cold weather.

Steps: Part 1 – The Setup

  1. Test your soil: Target pH 5.8–6.5. Add lime/fertilizer only if needed.
Recommended: Soil pH Test Kit (Amazon)
  2. Get supplies: Zenith seed, compost, spreader.
Recommended: Organic Compost / Top Dressing (Amazon), Hand Held Seed Spreader (Amazon)
  3. Clear the area: Kill existing grass/weeds with non-selective herbicide.
  4. Prepare the soil: Remove debris, till/rake, mix in compost (≈ 1 yd³/1,000 sq ft), level smooth.

Steps: Part 2 – Seeding

  1. Seeding rate: Apply 1 lb per 1,000 sq ft for a lush stand in 2–3 months of summer growth.
  2. Spread evenly: Use a cyclone spreader. Divide seed in half; go east–west, then north–south for uniform coverage. Do not mix seed with sand.
  3. Cover lightly: Rake no deeper than 1/4 inch, or top-dress with a very thin layer of compost.
  4. Roll smooth: Use a drum roller if available. On slopes, use a light layer of straw only if you’re not compost-mulching. Buy Lawn Roller (Amazon)
  5. Water: Water thoroughly immediately after planting; then keep soil constantly moist (in summer: 3–4 short waterings/day, ~5 minutes each, avoiding runoff). Programmable Hose Timer (Amazon)

After Seeding

Watering

After emergence, gradually reduce frequency until watering only as needed once established.

Weed Control

For broadleaf weeds, 2,4-D-type herbicides can be used according to label. Drive, Revolver, MSMA, or Quicksilver may be options (some require a licensed applicator). Always follow labels. Frequent mowing is excellent early weed control.

Mowing

Begin mowing at a 1.5 inch cut height once there is growth to mow (even weeds). Regular mowing plus Zenith’s density helps crowd out weeds.

Seed Options & Coverage

Caution on Herbicides

Do not use pre-emergent or “weed and feed” products for at least 90 days before or after seeding. They can prevent germination or kill young seedlings.

Exception: A non-selective weed killer used during site prep before seeding is acceptable.

How Much Seed Do I Need?

Measure the area: length × width = square feet (subtract buildings, paved areas). Seed at 1 lb per 1,000 sq ft.
